Tottenham have joined the list of clubs showing an interest in Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah as they look to ease their defensive problems in the January transfer window.

That’s according to Kicker, who say Tottenham are one of the clubs ‘showing interest’ in the defender as they look to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s options in central defence.

The newspaper explains that Premier League clubs are seemingly lining up to sign Tah, who has a ‘fundamental desire’ to move to England’s top flight and has made that known publically on more than one occasion.

He was willing to move in the summer, but no clubs came forward for him and he remained where he was. That has now ‘apparently changed’, though, as his continued ‘fantastic development’ is leading to increased interest.

Tottenham in particular are keen as they have ‘acute needs’ in defence as injury problems for several players have left them short.

Tah could be an answer to the problem but a move for him in the January transfer window is ‘virtually impossible’ according to Kicker.

While the defender has an €18m release clause for the summer that’s does not activate in January and Leverkusen are not interested in a sale.

They already have to do without two of their three regulars in the first six competitive games of 2024, with Edmond Tapsoba and Odilon Kossonou likely to travelling to the African Cup of Nations.

Losing Tah also would mean their whole three-man defence would be gone and further jeopardise the lofty goals of the club, who have a distinct chance of winning the Bundesliga this season.

Thus, Tottenham would need to come up with an extremely convincing offer to secure a sale, even if the defender’s own career dreams do play into their hands.
