Wolverhampton Wanderers fans will be aware of their club’s attempt to try and sign Boulaye Dia from Salernitana in the dying days of the summer transfer window.
Gary O’Neil wanted a new striker to help bolster his squad at Molineux, and decided that the Senegal international would do just the trick.
However, the offer of a loan with an option to buy wasn’t accepted by Salernitana, who sent it back to Wolves, and the decision to do so was commented on on Friday by their director of football, Morgan De Sanctis in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.
Following the late window drama, Dia wasn’t happy, and disappeared for a bit, only to be fined by his club and eventually return, with some injuries sprinkled in the middle for added taste.
All this means he hasn’t followed up on last season’s form, with many, including Corriere dello Sport, wondering whether Salernitana wouldn’t have been better off just letting the player go to Wolves.
De Sanctis replied: “Now it seems so, in fact I’ll tell you, it’s even fair for someone to add: why buy him? But he was our star striker, sixteen goals behind Osimhen and Lautaro Martinez. Then on the last day of the market, when we couldn’t have done anything to replace him even if we wanted to, an inadmissible and insulting offer from England to have him on loan pops up: what would they have said about us, or even about me, if I had done that?”
Strong words from the director, who clearly still has some resentment about the way Wolves acted in the summer transfer window.
