Liverpool youngster Sepp van den Berg has revealed how he thinks moving to Anfield early in his career has ultimately benefitted him, despite the fact he’s not yet starring for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The defender is currently on loan at FSV Mainz in Germany, the latest in a series of loan moves away from Liverpool in recent years.
He joined the Reds in a €1.9m deal from PEC Zwolle in July 2019 but has spent the last few years out on loan, first with Preston then Schalke last season and now Mainz for this season.
It’s the latest step of his development, with the 21-year-old keen to get regular playing time in one of Europe’s top five leagues as he looks to potentially establish himself at Liverpool down the line.
He’s only made four appearances for Liverpool’s first team since his arrival but doesn’t see that as a problem and in fact believes his choice to go there is working out for him.
“The fact that I went to England when I was 17 was a big advantage and now makes the difference,” he told the club’s official website.
“I learned a lot about defending there. The difference in performance is enormous, like from another world. I think that’s what made me the player I am today. My height is of course also an advantage.”
