Manchester United ‘would be ready’ to move for Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller, should he decide not to renew his contract with the German side beyond the end of this season.
That’s according to BILD, who say Manchester United remain in the background keeping an eye on Muller’s situation and how it may develop in the coming months.
Muller’s current deal with Bayern expires at the end of the season and both he and the German club are yet to decide whether to extend it further.
The German is very much a staple at the club at this point, having won 16 major trophies at the club since joining their academy in 2000.
However, he has found himself playing a diminishing role in the side of late as Thomas Tuchel looks to the future and develops the likes of Jamal Musiala in his place.
BILD explain that while he and the club can imagine an extension being signed despite that, it is absolutely destined to happen and if he doesn’t sign, ‘Manchester United would be ready’.
That might not sit well with the ambitious Muller and force him to look elsewhere, which is where Manchester United come into it.
They’re in the picture alongside American and Saudi Arabian clubs, who all ‘continue to keep an eye’ on Muller’s situation at Säbener Straße. Thus, a free transfer abroad cannot be ruled out.
Now, we would advise that Muller has consistently been linked with Manchester United for the best part of the last decade without anything ever coming of it. Indeed, if we were more cynical, we would point out that United get namedropped every time a new contract is in the offing.
Furthermore, at 34-years-old, Muller would be a strange signing for United given fans, pundits and everyone else in between believes they need to look to youth not established older pros.
Thus, we’ll take these latest reports with a hefty dose of salt and doubt for the time being and suggest this may be contract games from Muller and his team more than anything else.
