Despite playing the full 90 minutes against Bournemouth in the 2-0 loss for Newcastle United, Fabian Schär will not be taking part in the next game for Switzerland this international break.
The 31-year-old was called up by Murat Yakin for the game against Israel on Wednesday, but the Magpies star has had to ‘declare forfeit’ because of ‘muscular problems’.
This is being reported by Blick in his home country, as the Swiss Football Federation confirmed to the newspaper that the Newcastle player was injured.
It’s added that he will, for the time being, take part in a ‘customised individual training’ with a personal trainer at the hotel.
Blick explain that even if he had been fit, the Newcastle centre-back was unlikely to start, since Nico Elvedi has returned and is Yakin’s favoured choice to partner Manuel Akanji in the heart of his defence.
This is also a crucial game for Switzerland, as a win against Israel would see them qualify for next year’s Euros, meaning that they will want their best players on the pitch.
After that, they are set to face Kosovo at home on the 18th of November before travelling to Romania for their third game of the break.
