Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has admitted Borussia Dortmund took advantage of them not being at their best in last night’s defeat.
The Brazilian spoke to Brazilian journalist Fred Caldeira last night after Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
The Magpies hosted the Bundesliga side looking to make it back-to-back wins at St James Park in the competition following the impressive 4-1 win over Paris Saint Germain in the second round of fixtures.
That result had made them confident ahead of this clash, but they were unable to repeat their performance against the Parisians, with Dortmund putting in a strong defensive display to frustrate Newcastle.
That was an effective strategy and even more so after they managed to get themselves in front just before half time with a well worked counter attack that resulted in Felix Nmecha finishing superbly beyond Nick Pope.
Newcastle were unable to respond to that strike despite their best efforts and ultimately fell to their first loss in the Champions League since returning this season.
That was frustrating for Joelinton, who admits he and his teammates were below the level they have shown so far.
“I’m happy, firstly to return to the team,” he said.
“I’m happy to be feeling well after some injuries, most important is my health and being able to be back to myself today. I’m very happy but of course not in the game, we’re disappointed with the result.
“It was not the game we wanted to play; I think we played below what we’ve been playing in the Champions League. It’s the highest level and if you’re not at your best you are punished.
“They are experienced players who play for their countries, and we took on a very strong team who defended well and exploited our mistakes.
“There are three games left (in the Champions League) so let’s think about the Premier League, change the focus and win again on Saturday.”
