Brazil’s 2-0 defeat to Uruguay opened a stream of criticism towards Fernando Diniz’s side, and Newcastle United star Bruno Guimarães is one of those targeted by negative comments.

Despite his 16 caps for the national team, the midfielder could never impress with the yellow jersey, and people now begin to wonder whether he deserves that starting spot.

Several post-match stories today criticise Guimarães. One of them comes from UOL, who says the player ‘didn’t even come close to the protagonism he has at Newcastle’.

Brazilian fans gave the player a rating of 1.9 out of ten at Globo Esporte. The outlet also highlights how poor he was against Uruguay.

‘He was another who oscillated between trying to get between the centre-backs to help out with the ball and technical errors that he doesn’t usually make.’

Argentine newspaper Olé didn’t give Guimarães an easy time either, rating him with a 4 out of 10, claiming he did worse than his midfield partner Casemiro.

The 25-year-old may be in great shape at Newcastle, but he’ll still need to prove himself at the national team if he wants to have a guaranteed spot there.

Having his former Audax manager Fernando Diniz in charge was supposed to help Guimarães succeed for Brazil, but things haven’t changed, and not even the coach can stop him from being targeted by the local media.
