Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka has been urged to find a new club if there is no improvement in his situation at St James’ Park.
The Slovakia international hasn’t yet made an appearance this season and is providing cover to first-choice stopper, Nick Pope, at the Tyneside club. His situation at Newcastle hasn’t had an impact on his game time with the national team.
Dúbravka started in Slovakia’s 3-2 defeat to Portugal in the European qualifiers. After the tie, former Slovakia forward Róbert Vittek asked the stopper to consider his future with Eddie Howe’s side, and his quotes are relayed by Sport24.sk.
“With his performance against Portugal, he certainly caught the attention of several interesting clubs. If he doesn’t get an opportunity at Newcastle, I wish him to find a club in January where he will play regularly,” he said.
Dúbravka was restricted to two appearances in the EFL Cup with the Red Devils and former Liverpool defender Martin Škrtel has questioned his decision to join them.
“I don’t want to say that it was a bad move, transfers to such clubs happen once in a lifetime and he wanted to try it. However, he left as No.1 and returned as second choice,” Škrtel explained.
Škrtel made this claim when he was a guest on Slovakia’s Sport1 and he’s joined Vittek in urging his compatriot to consider his future at Newcastle.
“A goalkeeper with such qualities as he has deserves to catch [play]. Whether it will be at Newcastle or somewhere else. I am convinced that the match against Portugal was watched by many agents, coaches and officials, and Martin Dúbravka’s name was written down in many notebooks,” he added.
