Prior to Belgium’s upcoming games, there’s been a little controversy at the national team, as Fulham player Timothy Castagne made some comments about Thibaut Courtois.

The fullback claimed “it would be strange if Thibaut came back as if nothing had happened”, as the goalkeeper continues his recovery from a bad injury.

As Castagne today held a press conference at the national team campaign, he was obviously bombarded with questions about his statements. Quoted by DHNet, the Fulham player apologised for it all.

The Fulham player started by claiming he shouldn’t have said what he did just before the games.

“The timing of this interview wasn’t right. I shouldn’t have talked about it before important qualifying matches. We need to concentrate on football. And he’s in an important phase of his rehabilitation.”

Then when asked whether he’d apologise to Courtois, Castagne said he’s already spoke to the goalkeeper.

“Yes, we spoke. I’m not going to reveal the content of our conversation. If he’s not too angry with me? You’ll have to ask him. I don’t think he is. He knows the timing wasn’t right. I shouldn’t have done it and he knows that.”

The Fulham fullback once again said it was his fault and insisted he wants Courtois back in the squad when ready.

“I’m the one who blames myself. Thibaut remains a very good player. He will always be important to the group. I’m not going to speak for the rest of the team, but obviously we’re open to Thibaut’s return. It doesn’t just depend on us. We’ll see how it goes.”

Without Courtois, Belgium are playing Austria on Friday and Sweden on Monday in the Euro qualifiers. They’re currently on top of Group F, with four wins and one draw in five games, and should avoid controversies in the squad to keep up with that great form.
