While Newcastle United continue to celebrate their fantastic 4-1 win over Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League, the French side still try to understand such a heavy defeat.
It’s inevitable that such a negative result is credited to the manager, and as relayed by AS today, Luis Enrique is getting seriously blamed.
The outlet features some quotes from Christophe Dugarry, who, on RMC Sport, talked about how badly the coach prepared for the Newcastle match.
“Luis Enrique made mistakes, errors. I know him very well from when we were both at Barcelona. I was with him. He has enormous pride. He has an excessive ego. I guarantee he will stay that way. He will impose his thoughts and he will go all the way with the way he plays. He will die with his ideas. I think he lacks the real potential in his players.
“They arrive at Newcastle in a stadium on fire. The Newcastle boys must have said to themselves: ‘They think we’re stupid, like we’re kids. We’re going to run into them. We may not have great players, but you’ll see the intensity when we get on, we’ll punish their ankles.’ And that’s what happened! The coach thought Newcastle were rubbish.”
PSG had already beaten Borussia Dortmund in the first round, so they still stand in second in Group F. Still, the defeat to Newcastle revealed a lot about the club’s current strength, as people in France now start questioning how far they can go in the competition, even whether they will qualify for the knock-out stage.
Newcastle had a draw with AC Milan in their opening fixture, and now sit comfortable on top of the strongest group in the competition. Their next Champions League match is against Borussia Dortmund at St. James’ Park, but that’s only taking place after the international break.
