Mexican striker Javier Hernandez has admitted he feels he could have done better at West Ham United but was unlucky to be reunited with David Moyes at the club.

The forward has been speaking to Paramount Plus, relayed by the Spanish edition of Goal, about his career to date.

The striker currently finds himself playing in MLS with Los Angeles Galaxy, the latest in a long line of clubs in a varied career for the 35-year-old.

He’s played all over the world, starting his career in Mexico before a move to Manchester United in 2010. A four-year spell there led him to Real Madrid for a year before an eventual exit to Bayer Leverkusen.

After two years shining in the Bundesliga, he moved to West Ham for €17.8m, joining the ever-growing list of strikers to make the move to the Hammers over the years.

He spent two years at the club but never managed to show his absolute best, with a tally of 17 goals and four assists in 63 games largely seen as a failure rather than success. He feels the same way and admits things could have gone better for him.

“With West Ham I think it’s a story that happened to me like in Sevilla,” he said.

“Unfortunately, there were actions there that could have been done in the best way and maybe it could have had a different story because they are 2 clubs, that I could have identified with a lot.

“With them also for the fans because they are great fans. At West Ham situations happened there, well… that cannot be planned, obviously I had a past that was not the most profitable, for example, when I was with David Moyes in Manchester, and everyone knew it.

“So, five or six games after Slaven Bilić, who was the coach at the time, did everything so that I could go to West Ham, then when they fired him, they hired David Moyes.”

While Chicharito is now playing in America, there is another Mexican trying to make his way at West Ham and do better than he did.

That man is of course Edson Alvarez, who joined the Hammers in a €38m deal from Ajax in the summer transfer window.

He was one of several big signings in midfield following the departure of Declan Rice, with West Ham signing several players to fill the gap left behind by Rice’s departure.

There is great expectation around the midfielder, who had shone at Ajax during his time there and is expected to be a hit at the London Stadium.

Hernandez can see that happening, particularly under Moyes, who he believes could be the perfect manager for him.

“Well, I think it is a good step for him in his career after Ajax and also to gain experience in this league which I think will be very good for him and also in his position,” he added.

“Well, as we are seeing right now, West Ham are very good. Also speaking of David Moyes, he is a person who is more defensive than offensive, from my point of view, beyond the fact that he has teams that are also doing very well.

“He is going to be very good for Edson, I think he is going to be very good in his career.”
