Spanish side Granada are ‘well placed’ to sign defender Álvaro Fernández from Manchester United, but the deal is on standby as United search for a new left-back.
That’s according to AS, who say there are ‘decisive days’ ahead for the youngster as he eyes a move away from Old Trafford but has to wait to get it.
The newspaper reports that Álvaro wants regular playing time this season and knows he is unlikely to get that under Erik ten Hag, so ‘welcomes a loan’ away from Manchester United as a way to get it.
Several teams have knocked on his door, but it is Granada who are the best placed to secure his signature, while Getafe are waiting in the wings.
With Brandon Williams having also departed it has created a problem in that area of the squad and they are now seeking an experienced player to fill the position.
In the meantime, they don’t want to let Álvaro depart in case they can’t secure a transfer, leaving his Spanish suitors waiting.
Granada ‘would be delighted to have him’ and his agents view the project at the club very positively as there is a ‘possibility of growth’ that they like. They feel the same about Getafe, but it is Granada who are in ‘pole position’.
The initial idea was a loan with a purchase option of €7m but that has now been scrapped and if any deal is completed it will be a simple season-long loan deal. That’s currently on hold, though, as Manchester United seek a new left-back before letting him go.
