Called up to the Belgium national team by Marc Wilmots for the Euros, Watford’s Christian Kabasele didn’t get the nod this time around under Roberto Martinez, but that doesn’t really bother him.
Interviewed by RTBF on Friday, the centre-back explained being left out only wanted to make him work harder, which, after all, is a bonus for the Hornets and Walter Mazzarri.
He said: “At Watford I play in a back three, one the right or in the middle. My versatility can be a plus, and I’m progressing well tactically and physically. Our Italian manager is showing me how to position myself on the pitch and orientate my body to push forwards away from the danger zone.”
Facing some of the best strikers in the world, like Sergio Agüero and Diego Costa, the Watford centre-back is glad he has some speed to help him in case he makes mistakes, but you’ll be surprised who gave him the toughest time.
He explained: “I struggled the most against Victor Anichebe, but for me Romelu Lukaku is the best striker in the Premier League. It’s a shame that I can’t ask for autographs anymore because of my status (laughs).”
As for what the future holds, Kabasele might one day return to Africa, just like Anthony Vanden Borre, who recently signed for TP Mazembe in Congo, where he was born.
He said: “Why not? I didn’t get the chance to grow up over there”.
