Following a loan at Schalke 04, it was clear that Sepp van den Berg was not going to get regular game time at Liverpool, where the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté stand in his way.
That’s why another deal was struck with a Bundesliga side, this time Mainz 05, who welcomed the Dutchman on a loan with an option to buy.
The youngster was interviewed by Bild following the move while training with his new club, where he was asked about both Liverpool and a potential longer term future away from Anfield.
He then added: “Of course I can imagine staying in Mainz for more than one season.”
Regarding Liverpool as a club, he said: “A big club, maybe the biggest in the world, but it’s correspondingly difficult to assert oneself there. First of all, play again and help Mainz to maybe be even better than last season. You just have to be hungry if you want to play.”
Therefore, there is a chance that if the centre-back impresses enough on his loan from Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp’s former side could make the move permanent.
This is something the Reds are clearly happy with, having negotiated the deal.
