Jan Vertonghen is to get the opportunity to captain his country during the current international break, report Belgium’s DH. The Tottenham defender is usually third in line to take the Belgian armband and injuries have worked in his favour.
Vincent Kompany is the recognised captain, but his constant injury issues have seen Chelsea star Eden Hazard step up from his position as second choice. With Hazard also picking up an injury, which has caused huge disappointment in Belgium, the next man in line is Vertonghen.
The Belgian defender has once again been important for Mauricio Pochettino this season at Tottenham, playing more than 2,500 minutes during the current campaign. Having signed a new deal in December, Vertonghen’s current Tottenham contract lasts until June 2019.
Turning 30 years of age next month, Vertonghen isn’t too far away from picking up a century of caps for Belgium and should be able to do so over the next year or so.
