Last night, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva paid a visit to the Maracanã Stadium, where he watched Fluminense’s Copa Libertadores match against Sporting Cristal.
It’s absolutely no secret that the defender holds big love for the Rio de Janeiro side, where he played in the early years of his career.
In the past few months, there had been frequent rumours about a move to Fluminense, and those were dismissed by Silva claiming he’s staying at Chelsea. That happened once again last night, with the defender being quoted by Globo Esporte.
“We cannot guarantee anything. I don’t like to keep creating expectations, although the desire to end here for the gratitude I have for Fluminense, for having opened the doors for me, still exists, but I still have a year of contract with Chelsea. That’s the most important thing right now. I will fulfil the contract. The future belongs to God. We will see,” said Thiago Silva.
It was in February that Silva signed a new contract with Chelsea and frustrated Fluminense’s plans. He’s now committed to the Blues until the summer of 2024.
Silva is turning 39 in September, and that’s why the fans from the Rio de Janeiro side now wonder whether he’ll really move back there.
Since the centre-back has been showing a good level in the Premier League, it wouldn’t be strange to see him helping the Brazilian side next year, even if at an advanced age.
