Mikel Arteta was key to Kai Havertz’s decision to join Arsenal from Chelsea, after promising the player a role in his favourite position moving forwards.

That’s according to Sport BILD, who say ‘only the last details’ are left on the move for the player, who is keen to get back to his best at the Emirates.

The newspaper details Havertz’s impending move to Arsenal, which appears to be in the final stages after he completed the first part of a medical this week.

They say that the ‘main reason’ for the change is Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta, who has ‘assured’ Havertz that he can play in his favourite position in his side.

That is central or attacking midfield, with Arsenal’s plan to pair him with Martin Odegaard in either a double ten or a double eight formation with, ideally, Declan Rice behind them.

Havertz has mostly played up front for Chelsea but that has not worked out for him, and he wants to go back to playing ‘in his favourite position’ to prove himself there for Germany ahead of the Euros in his homeland next summer.

In addition, Arsenal can offer him the chance to compete for titles after their run for the title last season. Havertz seemingly doesn’t think that will be on offer at Chelsea. The Gunners can also offer Champions League football.

In the end, though, it was Arteta and his plans for Havertz and Arsenal that ‘played a big part’ in his decision to move across London.
