Ajax’s Jurriën Timber wants to join Arsenal in the summer window amid interest from Bayern Munich, according to De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij.
The 22-year-old has expressed his desire to change clubs this summer and the Gunners have already made an approach for him. Earlier reports from the Dutch press stated he’s agreed personal terms with Arsenal.
Verweij told De Telegraaf’s Kick-off podcast that the defender, after receiving interest from both Arsenal and Bayern, isn’t considering any other clubs. His comments are relayed by Ajax Fanatics.
“Timber has said from the very first moment that he only wants to leave Ajax for an absolute top club. He doesn’t listen at all to other clubs that report after Arsenal and Bayern Munich,” he said.
Four days ago, De Telegraaf reported the Gunners saw their €35m bid for Timber get rejected by the Eredivisie side, who demanded €60m. The two clubs will have to continue negotiations to find an agreement for the transfer.
Despite the difference in valuation, Verweij believes Arsenal and Ajax could find a middle ground.
“Ajax and Arsenal really still have to negotiate about the transfer fee. But Timber has also been promised to think along, so there is an agreement. No fixed transfer fee, but that we think along. Ajax bet on €60m. I think they will come out between €40m and €50m,” Verweij explained.
Former Ajax star Lisandro Martínez has excelled in his debut season at Manchester United. The journalist suggests his impact may have convinced Arsenal to bet on Timber.
“The fact that Martínez did so well at United was also an indication for Arsenal that it is possible to get players from the Eredivisie who immediately do well,” he added.
