Player has ‘agreement’ with Arsenal, was in London with agent – Gunners bid ‘still far from’ club’s demand

Late on Monday, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported Arsenal have made a bid for Ajax’s Jurrien Timber.

De Telegraaf now back it up and say sources close to the Dutch club have informed them the Gunners have tabled an ‘opening bid of €35m’ for the defender. This is ‘still far from’ the €60m demanded by Ajax.

New Ajax manager Maurice Steijn was told the 22-year-old would only leave for a top club. The coach was hoping to count on the player but he’s now resigned to losing him in this window.

The Netherlands international has a contract until 2025 and this, as per the report, is interesting for several clubs.

It’s stated Timber, who can operate as a centre-back and on the right side of the defence, was recently in London with his mother, brother and agent, to watch the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United.

Sources around Ajax have informed De Telegraaf the player has an indication of what he could earn at Arsenal. They also add ‘there is an agreement on a multi-year’ contract. The two clubs have to agree a deal for the transfer to take shape.

Timber lost his place in the national team after Ronald Koeman replaced Louis van Gaal. The newspaper says a move to Arsenal would help him to find a way back into Oranje’s starting lineup.

Meanwhile, ESPN NL claim Arsenal aren’t the only option for the Dutchman as Bayern Munich are also showing interest in him.
