Bayern Munich are ‘interested’ in a potential deal for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg as they look to add another midfielder to their squad.
That’s according to Sport BILD, relaying information from the Bayern Insider podcast, with the club’s “Sport Committee” recently having ‘discussed’ his name among possible transfer options.
They met on Tuesday as part of their weekly assemblies to discuss and plan transfers this summer when the name of their former midfielder was brought up.
Those in charge believe the Tottenham man ‘has the qualities’ that manager Thomas Tuchel is looking for in the number six position, even though he plays more of a central midfield role at Spurs.
He left for Southampton in 2016 and then joined Tottenham in 2020 but spent several years being trained by Mehmet Scholl, Jupp Heynckes and later Pep Guardiola, which Bayern value that highly.
His current contract at Tottenham expires in 2025 and because of that his advisor is currently ‘offering him on the market’.
That agent, none other than Pini Zahavi, is an ‘old acquaintance’ at Bayern having taken the likes of David Alaba and Robert Lewandowski to the club. He was also part of the latter’s move away.
He is not particularly well loved at the club given Uli Hoeneß once referred to him as a “money-grabbing piranha”, but the suggestion is that the old relationship could help facilitate transfer talks, nonetheless.
According to Bayern Insider, the Bavarians want to make concessions and sign a number six this summer and because the top two on the market, Declan Rice and Rodri are unavailable, they are not broadening their search.
Hence Højbjerg’s name being brought up, with the Tottenham man very much an option for them at this moment in time.
