Tottenham are yet to hold ‘concrete talks’ with Julian Nagelsmann about taking over as manager, despite contacting him ‘weeks ago’.
That’s according to Sport 1, who say any negotiations to make the German manager Antonio Conte’s replacement will not happen until Tottenham have hired a new sporting director.
Nagelsmann has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham since Conte departed at the end of March, with several reports making it clear he was among the leading candidates for the Spurs hierarchy.
Indeed, a report last week made it clear that Daniel Levy was pushing hard to secure his signature, but Sport 1 insist that isn’t the case.
Despite initially contacting him weeks ago they have not pushed forward as yet, instead focusing on their search for a new director of football before hiring a new manager.
This is also an important factor for Nagelsmann, who doesn’t want to leave anything to chance after his exit from Bayern Munich. He wants to ‘know exactly what’ his next employers are planning with him before accepting a position.
He has no interest in taking a job at a club who are on ‘shaky ground’, hence why he rejected the chance to speak to Chelsea about taking over at Stamford Bridge.
A further issue for him is that he will need to build a whole new backroom team at whatever club he joins next.
That’s because, according to Sport 1’s information, long term associates Dino Toppmöller, Benjamin Glück and Xaver Zembrod won’t be joining him wherever he goes. Furthermore, goalkeeper coach Michael Rechner as well as team psychologist Maximilian Pelka will be staying with Bayern.
Nagelsmann is already in talks with potential replacements but first wants any new, potential employers to set out their plans, and that includes Tottenham.
