Last week, reports coming out of the Mexican press stated Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion are chasing Feyenoord star Santiago Giménez.
These claims are backed up TV Azteca, who state the Magpies and Roberto De Zerbi’s side are in the picture to sign the striker in the summer.
The Mexico international joined the Dutch club from Cruz Azul last summer and has been in fine form for the Eredivisie side this season, managing 18 goals and four assists from 37 matches in all competitions.
His performances have ‘aroused interest’ from clubs across Europe and this is when both Newcastle and Brighton are mentioned.
It’s explained the two Premier League sides, along with Benfica and Sevilla are the clubs, ‘interested’ to sign the 21-year-old in the summer.
Giménez scored his 10th league goal and also managed an assist in his side’s 5-1 win over RKC Waalwijk at the weekend. After the tie, Feyenoord manager Arne Slot responded to the recent reports linking him to other clubs.
“It is already special that he plays football here. Most people don’t know, but in Mexico you can earn a little more money than at Feyenoord. It says a lot about the conscious choice he made,” Slot said, as relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
“It cannot be ruled out that there are clubs left and right that say ‘gosh, he shoots them in easily and is still quite young’.”
Last week, Slot had advised the frontman to not be distracted by reports linking him to the Premier League sides and clubs across Europe.
