Wolves player faces blow after national manager decision – Not even in match-day squad

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Nunes has been left out of the Portugal squad to face Liechtenstein in the European qualifiers at the Estádio José Alvalade later today, according to multiple reports.

New Portugal manager Roberto Martínez included the 24-year-old in his first call-up for this month’s international break.

Maisfutebol state the ex-Everton manager has dropped the Wolves player and Diogo Leite, who is on loan at Union Berlin from FC Porto, from the 23-man squad for today’s fixture.

Maisfutebol’s report is backed up by A Bola, but neither of them have provided an explanation as to why the Wolves player and the defender have been dropped from the match-day squad.

Martínez could be quizzed on his decision to drop Nunes and Leite after the clash against Liechtenstein.

Nunes has been part of the national team squad since he made his debut for them in 2021, making 11 appearances.

Portugal’s next match is against Luxembourg at the weekend and it remains to be seen whether the Wolves midfielder can find his way back into the match-day squad for that clash.
