As you’re probably aware, life has been difficult for Calvin Bassey at Ajax this season since leaving Rangers in the summer, before Michael Beale was appointed as manager to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
The defender has not found life away from Ibrox easy at all, struggling to establish himself or impress with the Dutch side this season.
That continued over the weekend with a poor display against Feyenoord and one man who has had enough is Valentijn Driessen, as Sport Bookies in Holland cover today, who believes the defender is ‘unworthy’ of playing for Ajax.
He was many watching the clash between the two Dutch giants over the weekend, in which Bassey struggled throughout.
He was often caught out of position, something that didn’t go unnoticed, with the former Rangers man coming in for criticism for the eventual 3-2 defeat.
“The first three balls he just plays to a Feyenoord player!” he told Veronica Offside.
“Then you have to switch from attack to defence again. That takes a lot of strength. It’s just not possible at Ajax.
“Maybe he’s a sweet guy, eager to learn, but you’re not going to pick up points with this kind of player.
“You know what you have to do? You have to give him away. Yes, away. You can’t do this at Ajax. This is not going to happen, is it? It’s a disgrace.”
Whether the Dutch giants will have the option to send him back to Rangers is debatable, with Bassey very much in their rear-view these days.
Michael Beale’s side currently have Ben Davies and John Souttar to fill the centre-back role, after signing both to replace Bassey in the summer, while there is also Ridvan Yilmaz to cover the left-back spot.
It means Bassey hasn’t been missed at Rangers, even if they have conceded the same amount of goals this season as they did in the entirety of last year with him in the side.
The defender was well loved at Ibrox, though, and perhaps Beale would like his chance to work with him if given the opportunity that Van der Meyde believes should be offered.
