Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has publicly admitted that Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo has not been happy with his reversed fortunes at the club in recent weeks.
Cancelo has been on loan with the German giants since the end of the January transfer window, when he was a surprise arrival on deadline day.
He was initially thrust straight into Nagelsmann’s first team but has found himself out of the picture of late, with the Bayern coach using other options.
The Portuguese international recently spent the 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart sat on the bench and that continued for the Champions League clash against PSG this week, where he was only afforded a four-minute cameo, in which he managed an assist.
That’s led to plenty of talk that the Manchester City loanee could become something of a problem down the line, having expected to be a starter and key player at the Allianz Arena.
Now Nagelsmann has confirmed as much, likening him to another former Manchester City defender Angelino, who had a similar problem under Nagelsmann at RB Leipzig.
“You could see that the situation wasn’t that easy for him,” he told Kicker.
“I had a player like that in Leipzig once. I can say it, I think, he won’t be angry. When he (Angelino) played, he was the happiest person in the world. You thought: cool, you can go fishing with him for two hours. Just as an example, I don’t fish.
“It’s similar (with Cancelo): if he plays, everything is fine. If he doesn’t play, everything is not fine. That’s also normal.
“There are players who can handle it better, and there are players they are less able to deal with it.”
