It was always bound to happen the minute Wilfried Gnonto started playing well for Leeds United, and the forward’s performance against Manchester United has done nothing but make the Italian media sad about how he left Inter.
The 19-year-old left the Serie A side in 2020 on a free transfer to get some first-team football, which he found at FC Zürich in Switzerland.
He stayed there for two years until Leeds came knocking, paying €4.5m to get him in the summer, and while Jesse Marsch didn’t use him straight away, he gradually included the forward into the team before getting sacked.
The caretaker trio put in charge for the game against the Red Devils kept that faith and started Gnonto, who repaid their trust with a goal within a minute in the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.
They even had the chance to repatriate him in the summer, only for the Elland Road side to swoop in for €4m, described as ‘pennies, considering the enormous talent he has’.
His value now ‘goes far beyond imagination’ considering the recent impact he has had at Leeds, and those in charge in Yorkshire are ‘well aware of the great deal’ they have pulled off here, knowing they could bring in a ‘substantial capital gain’ going forward.
