With Sporting manager Ruben Amorim today holding a press conference, there was barely time to speak of the Lions’ next game, as most questions were about the transfer market.
One of the subjects was obviously the departure of Pedro Porro, who’s on his way to Tottenham Hotspur, although the deal is still to be officially confirmed.
Amorim made it very clear that they’re not happy to lose such an important player, but still wished the Spaniard the best of luck at Spurs.
“In relation to Porro, it’s more than what happened with Nuno Mendes, with Matheus… More than the professional relationship, and of course they are missed, the personal relationship is something we are very sorry about. Our relationship is very close, he will be missed,” said Ruben Amorim (via Record).
Speaking of Porro’s qualities, Amorim said he’s a unique player, and that’s why Tottenham spent so much on his signing.
“Bellerín has not yet been introduced. A player with Porro’s characteristics cannot be arranged, and that’s why they beat his clause. Looking at a player who is a right back and has so many goals and assists… We have to try to build another one, that’s what we’re going to do.”
Tottenham’s interest in Porro was first revealed last year, and the London side spent weeks in negotiations with Sporting for the transfer.
The Lions always claimed the fullback would only leave in case his €45m release clause was triggered, and with Spurs unable to pay that all at once, it’s even claimed that the Lisbon side managed to make a few extra million.
Porro leaves Sporting with 12 goals and 20 assists in 98 matches.
