Atlético Madrid have identified Tottenham Hotspur’s Matt Doherty as the target to bolster their fullback positions on deadline day.
That’s according to Marca, who state the La Liga side and the north London club share a good relationship.
It’s claimed this is what made it possible for Atlético to find an agreement with Tottenham for Doherty, just like it helped them sign Sergio Reguilón from Spurs on loan last summer.
The Republic of Ireland international’s move to the Madrid club is ‘only pending’ because of Felipe. The 33-year-old is close to finalising a transfer to Nottingham Forest and his exit will allow Diego Simeone’s side to register Doherty.
As soon as Felipe leaves Los Rojiblancos today, they will be able to complete the operation to sign the Spurs fullback, likely on a loan deal until the end of this season.
This move could see Doherty enjoy more game time, something that would have been made difficult for him with the impending arrival of Pedro Porro at Tottenham.
