Cody Gakpo ‘fits perfectly’ with how Manchester United want to play under Erik ten Hag, particularly now that Cristiano Ronaldo has departed.
That’s according to journalist Gianluca di Marzio, who says it will be between Liverpool and Manchester United for the PSV Eindhoven star.
Gakpo was linked with Manchester United throughout the summer transfer window, with them showing an interest early in the window before electing to spend their money elsewhere on the likes of Antony.
They have continued to be linked with a move, though, as he has continued to shine for PSV this season and added to his growing reputation with several impressive performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup.
That has seemingly made Manchester United decide to push for him in January, particularly after Ronaldo’s departure opened up a significant space in their wage budget.
They’ve been linked with a move again over the past few weeks and Di Marzio believes Old Trafford would be a smart move for him.
“At Manchester United or Liverpool,” he told Soccer News when asked where he fits best.
“He fits perfectly with Klopp’s style of play at Liverpool, but perhaps even better at Manchester United, now that they no longer have Cristiano Ronaldo at their disposal. There is room for a player like him and for Gakpo, this is the right time to move to the Premier League.
“Only Premier League clubs can pay him, because PSV are asking a lot for him. So, I think it will be a battle between Manchester United and Liverpool.
“Maybe as early as January, but I don’t really think so. In fact, I expect that in January we will be facing a ‘different kind’ of market.
“It will probably be the summer, but it is quite possible that Manchester United will start negotiations now, because they need to replace Ronaldo.”
