Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has claimed Arsenal chief Per Mertesacker “would be the perfect man” to replace Oliver Bierhoff at the DFB.
They are currently on the hunt for Bierhoff’s replacement following his resignation as managing director after Hansi Flick’s side failed to qualify for the World Cup knockout stages.
Mertesacker is believed to be one of the men they are eyeing up, with a recent report stating that he is being considered for a new role that would see him focusing on Germany’s youth development.
That is a position he accustomed to, having been in charge of Arsenal’s academy since his retirement in 2018.
Whether there is an approach from DFB remains to be seen and the Arsenal man has insisted it yet to happen when asked about it directly.
“I could imagine one very well. And there I am with Marcel Reif, who suggested Per Mertesacker,” he said on the Einfach mal Luppen podcast, relayed by Sport 1.
“I really think Per is the perfect man for the job. He is a great personality, also has an absolute authority and on the other hand he can also be a buddy guy.
“Per is mega professional and could also make sure that there is a certain closeness to the fans again. In my eyes, he would be the perfect man for the job.
“(He) has gained a lot of experience in the academy of Arsenal London over the years.”
