Cast your mind back to 2019 and you might remember Arvin Appiah’s surprising move from Nottingham Forest to UD Almeria.

The 18-year-old had barely featured for Nottingham Forest, having made just eight appearances for the first team after rising through the various youth ranks when Almeria came calling for him.

Their decision to pay €8.85m for the relatively unknown youngster baffled many, who had numerous questions, including why a Spanish second-tier side were paying such a fee for him.

It was a deal that baffled most, including those at Nottingham Forest, and it seems it has not worked out well for Almeria.

Diario de Almeria cover the situation around the forward today and the ‘unexpected problem’ they face with the 21-year-old.

He’s currently on loan at Tenerife after moving there in the summer but that deal is not working out and the club’s sporting director Juan Carlos Cordero has already informed Appiah’s agent that he will be coming back.

That decision is yet to be officially communicated to Tenerife but it ‘seems absurd’ to end it as Almeria want the player to get more minutes and not to cut his progression.

That is ‘leaving much to be desired’ since Turki Al-Sheikh ‘took a fancy to him’ and paid €8.8m to Nottingham Forest to secure his signature.

Since then, Appiah’s numbers have been ‘rather discreet’. His best season so far has seen him manager 11 starts and one goal.

As far as the Spanish side are concerned it doesn’t look like they will ‘be able to make a return on their investment’, particularly with this set to be his second unsuccessful loan spell away.

All in all, the deal has been a poor one from day one, not that Nottingham Forest will be all that concerned.
