Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has revealed he saw “two missed calls from Manchester United” when he recently found Louis van Gaal’s lost phone.
Van Gaal is currently at the World Cup with the Netherlands, where he has guided them to the quarter finals of the competition and a clash with Argentina.
It’s been a winter of content for the veteran manager, who is only in temporary charge of the Netherlands before Ronald Koeman returns after this tournament.
So far things have been going well for him and his side, although it seems there was one hairy moment when he recently left his phone in a toilet.
That misfortune ended up being a stroke of luck for journalist Valentijn Driessen, who happened to find it and return it to an ‘astonished’ press chief Bas Ticheler.
That wasn’t before he had a look to check who owned the device and discovered two missed calls from Manchester United in the process.
“So, I tapped on that screen like this: saw Truus and Louis, arm in arm. Really a very nice photo.
“Two missed calls from Manchester United. Unbelievable. I didn’t look any further after that. What I said: here you have a phone, is from the national coach.”
Now we’re not sure if Driessen is joking here but assuming he’s not, it’s a very interesting revelation ahead of the World Cup.
Our thoughts immediately jumped to Cody Gakpo, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in January and the idea of Erik ten Hag phoning his compatriot to discuss the player and perhaps ask Van Gaal to put in a good word.
That could also be the case for Denzel Dumfries and Memphis Depay, both of whom who are reportedly on United’s list ahead of next month.
On the other hand, perhaps they were just calling to check in on Tyrell Malacia or to wish their former manager well as he and his side shine in Qatar.
Perhaps we’ll hear more in the coming weeks, but the idea of Manchester United phoning Van Gaal is certainly a tantalising one to say the least.
