Aston Villa made Robin Olsen’s stay permanent in the summer after initially signing the goalkeeper on loan from AS Roma at the start of this year.
The Sweden international’s former club, Malmö FF, appointed Henrik Rydström as their new manager earlier this month. He believes the new coach was the missing ‘piece of the puzzle’ for Malmö.
Olsen provides cover to Emiliano Martínez at Aston Villa. Despite this and praising the new Malmö coach, the 32-year-old has ruled out the possibility of returning to his old club in the near future.
“It won’t happen that I’ll be there from the start. Both me and the family enjoy England very well. I play in a club in the best league in the world and there is some work left to do over there before I return home,” he said, as quoted by Expressen.
Olsen’s loan move to Aston Villa was made permanent when Steven Gerrard was at Villa Park. The Premier League side showed him the exit door in October and brought in Unai Emery as his successor.
“He has been interesting. He is actually a very knowledgeable coach who has come in with his philosophy. Just seeing how he and his team work is incredibly impressive,” Olsen explained.
“The time they put in, all the details and everything, it just shows what a top coach he is. That makes it very nice and inspiring to play under him.
“They (the coaching staff) came in with new ideas and the new idea is to play from the back. This means that you take risks. I think it went very well, even though we only had one and a half weeks together. We are a completely different team under Emery.”
In his first game in charge, Emery helped Villa beat Manchester United in the league on November 6th. A few days later, the two sides faced each other in the EFL Cup at Old Trafford, and the visitors suffered a 4-2 defeat.
Olsen started for Aston Villa in the cup tie and was at fault for one of the goals conceded by his side.
“It hurts, you never want to make mistakes. Especially not in big games and especially not when you get the chance to play,” the Swede stressed.
“It was tough that evening and the following day. At the same time, you have to try to take the positive things from that match with you as well. It was that I haven’t had the game time for a while and then to come into Old Trafford against United and dare to play that game, I’m happy about that.”
