Mauricio Pochettino was last night spotted at Barcelona’s clash with Villarreal as speculation mounts about him taking over at Aston Villa.
The Argentine is reportedly the favourite to take charge at Aston Villa after they decided to sack Steven Gerrard last night.
He’s regularly been named among the potential candidates for the job in the last few weeks as speculation mounted about Gerrard’s future.
Those in charge at Villa Park are keen to make a high-profile appointment and are said to be willing to offer a huge salary to secure it, which could make Pochettino a viable candidate.
They label him an ‘exceptional spectator’ for the clash with Villarreal but move quickly to douse any flames that might come from that given Xavi’s struggles at present.
According to the newspaper Joan Laporta has no intention of changing manager and Pochettino’s presence at the game was simply because of his ‘good relations’ with the club that came during his time living in Barcelona playing for Espanyol.
Indeed, he still has a house in the city and the invitation to this game was nothing more than a nice gesture from those in charge at the Camp Nou.
In other words, Barcelona aren’t lining up a change any time soon and if Aston Villa do want the Argentine, then they won’t be providing any sort of competition.
