Marcus Antonsson signed for Leeds United in 2016 from Kalmar FF, a club in his native Sweden.
The switch was a big one for the attacker, with the Championship being a step up from the Allsvenskan. At the time, Leeds were still desperately trying to find a formula which could help them return to Premier League football, and each gamble like Antonsson was a step in that process.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go the way the player will have wanted and after just a season with Leeds he was sent on loan to Blackburn Rovers, before returning to Swedish football with Malmo in 2018.
His time since has been chaotic, playing on loan for Stabæk and Halmstads BK before signing permanently for IFK Värnamo in February 2022.
Speaking to Fotbollskanalen, he said he’s concentrating on the end of the Swedish season, and will just keep his head down like he did after his move to Leeds: “It was the same when I left Kalmar, that I managed to stay focused and just keep going and perform all the way to the end. That’s what I want to do now. Then I enjoy myself, but in this industry you can never say anything in advance.”
Specifically on leaving Swedish football for another big adventure, he said: “Yes, I don’t close any doors. Neither for Värnamo nor within Sweden or abroad. You can make that assessment after the season.”
