Newcastle United’s Sven Botman was initially picked for the Netherlands U21 squad for this month’s international break.
The defender, however, decided not to join the camp in order to focus on the Magpies. He arrived at St James’ Park from Lille in the summer transfer window and needs time to adapt to the needs of English football.
Jong Oranje coach Erwin van de Looi was disappointed with the 22-year-old and also admitted he didn’t understand Botman’s decision.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has now come out in defence of the Dutchman and stressed that staying at the Tyneside club will benefit him in the long run.
It’s claimed Botman could have had a chance of being part of Louis van Gaal’s squad for the Qatar World Cup following an injury to Bruno Martins Indi. AZ Alkmaar have confirmed their player was successful operated on and will not feature again in this calendar year.
Van Gaal must find a replacement for Bruno Martins Indi and it is unlikely that would be Botman, after his decision to not be part of the Netherlands U21 squad earlier this month.
