Ajax’s 2-1 loss at Liverpool is ‘absolutely no shame’ as other teams have been ‘blown away at Anfield’ in recent years.
That’s according to journalist Sjoerd Mossou, who believes things could have been worse for the Dutch giants.
Alfred Schreuder’s side were beaten at Anfield in matchday two of Group A last, with Joel Matip’s 89th minute header the difference between the two sides.
In truth Ajax were lucky not to be beaten by a bigger scoreline, with Liverpool dominating possession and creating the most chances, racking up 24 in total and ten on target compared to Ajax’s three and one.
Jurgen Klopp’s side looked much closer to the side we have become accustomed to seeing in recent years but lacked that cutting edge in the final third.
In fact, Liverpool can be aggrieved they didn’t score more and Mossou believes Ajax should take that into consideration.
“We can be very dramatic about it, but if you lose 2-1 at Anfield it is absolutely no shame,” Ajax Showtime report him saying.
“The game was admittedly inadequate, especially on the ball. But just about every team in the last five years has been blown away at Anfield.
“Then you shouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case with Ajax too. I tasted a bit of a crazy kind of surprise about Ajax at Liverpool.
“Actually, as Ajax, you just have to shrug your shoulders and move on. After the 1-1, you hope Ajax throw it off, but they didn’t succeed. They were too impotent for that. Losing at Anfield was calculable. In the home games, you have to do it.”
