Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic was sent out on loan by Jurgen Klopp at the start of the season. The Serbian international signed for Sporting Lisbon, after failing to make an impact at Fenerbahce last season.

Markovic, however, hasn’t been playing regularly whilst with the Portuguese club and we covered a report yesterday that he could return to Liverpool in January.

His former manager Vítor Pereira at Fenerbahce has been speaking to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, and it appears he is quite critical of the Liverpool star.

Pereira insists Markovic needs to understand that he needs to work hard, despite him earning a lot of money as a youngster. He said: “Markovic has a lot of talent but needs to refocus his goals. If he is earning millions in his early twenties, that does not mean he doesn’t need to work anymore.

Pereira’s comments will make sense to some who haven’t seen the player impress since joining Liverpool from Benfica. Markovic arrived at Liverpool with a lot of expectations, but hasn’t really made any progress in the past couple of years.

However, Vitoria is Benfica manager, and Markovic now plays for their bitter rivals Sporting, so that could explain it.
