A couple of days ago Memphis Depay completed his permanent switch to Lyon after being overlooked by Manchester United Jose Mourinho this season.
However, reports claim Paris-Saint Germain made a last minute attempt to sign the Dutchman, but it was too late. In fact, Lyon’s President Aulas claimed Paris-Saint Germain tried to outbid them for Depay: “Paris-Saint Germain tried to outbid us in the last moment led by Patrick Kluivert.”
Paris-Saint Germain’s director of football, Patrick Kluivert, has confirmed to French newspaper L’Equipe that he spoke to Depay, but the Ligue 1 giants had no intention of signing him.
He said: “I know Memphis very well, I spoke to him, I didn’t try to sign him and I am very glad that he plays in Lyon. I spoke with him, but it was not directly to sign him.”
Depay arrived at Manchester United following an impressive season with PSV, when he was the top scorer in Dutch league. However, Depay failed to deliver under former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, and by the end of last season had lost his place in the team.
The Dutch international managed just 20 minutes of Premier league football this season under Mourinho, and would certainly be hoping to make a bigger impact in France. Manchester United reportedly have a first-option clause in Depay’s contract, which is understood to be around €35m.
Kluivert, by his account, was just giving friendly transfer advice.
