FC Koln’s financial woes following the Coronavirus pandemic could force them to sell defender Timo Hübers this summer, something which could come as good news for Leeds United.
Leeds were named as one of the interested parties in the defender over the last few days, with a report in England stating that they and several sides in the Premier League and Championship have him on their shopping list.
BILD cover that today and say that Hübers’ ‘strong performances’ have spread to the island and seen rumours linking the likes of Leeds to him.
They offer no information on that front, neither confirming nor denying the rumour, but look at how ‘realistic’ a transfer would be.
They state that Hübers still has a contract with FC Koln until 2023, and coach Steffen Baumgart plans to make him a regular player in future.
An early contract extension is possible for him, but the club’s ‘financial woes’,due to the pandemic, which are around €85m, could mean that Hübers is ‘likely to leave the club’ if they were to receive an ‘immoral offer’.
In addition to that, the club’s new sports boss Christian Keller only has a ‘mini-budget’ of around €46m, so anything that can be added to that would be welcomed.
The reports in England had the likes of Leeds paying around €7m, which would be more than welcome.
Whether they’re willing to make a move remains to be seen, but it appears the opportunity is there for them should they wish to do so.
