Earlier today, we covered a claim in the French media that Rennes weren’t interested in playing the now cancelled UEFA Europa Conference League game against Tottenham on December 15th.
That was a date put forward by Spurs, who asked for the game to be called off following 13 staff and players tested positive for Covid-19, which UEFA agreed to.
This was a blow to Rennes, who had already travelled for the fixture, being assured it would be played, forcing them to return to Brittany early on Thursday morning.
Ouest-France were the ones reporting that the Ligue 1 side didn’t want it pushed back by six days, primarily because there was no guarantee that Tottenham’s issues would be solved, and that’s been now confirmed by the French club’s president of the administration council, Jacque Delanoë, as relayed by Ouest-France.
He said: “We haven’t validated this date”.
This shows just how annoyed Rennes are, regardless of whether this match meant very little to them, having already qualified first from their group.
They were even prepared to field a weakened defence as an experiment, which could have helped Tottenham’s chances of qualifying for the next round.
Either way, there’s more drama to be expected here, with the fixture needed to be played before December 31st.
