Struggling for game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Donny van de Beek was a recurrent name throughout the summer transfer window, with Everton coming the closest to signing him from Manchester United.
There is perhaps something poetically ironic that the Dutchman was the final goalscorer of the Norwegian’s time at the helm of the Old Trafford ship, scoring his side’s only goal in a 4-1 loss to Watford, which was the final nail in the coffin.
Either way, there will be hope from the player’s side that whoever comes in to replace Solskjaer will trust him more, but until the very end, his (new) agent tried his best to find him a new landing spot.
An article from Sport on Monday explained that Xavi had turned down the opportunity to sign the midfielder, who was reportedly ‘delighted’ at the idea, which could open the door for Everton in January.
The Toffees, through their director of football Marcel Brands, made a real attempt to get van de Beek on loan, and that could end up being a thing once again in the coming weeks if Michael Carrick continues in Solskjaer’s footsteps and leaves the Holland international on the bench.
As we’ve said, everything could change for the 24-year-old in the next few weeks if a new manager starts believing in him, but the fact his agent is still offering him around suggests Everton will get a second chance at getting their man.
Also, there’s no guarantee van de Beek would be as delighted at the prospect of a move to Goodison Park compared to Barcelona, but if it means time on the pitch, he might not care all that much.
