Wednesday’s edition of French newspaper L’Equipe has a detailed interview with Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The majority of the discussion is focused on the 34-year-old’s views on his Euro 2020 disappointment, where they were knocked by Switzerland on penalties. He also detailed what went wrong for the World Cup winners in the UEFA tournament.
At the end of the interview, the Spurs captain was asked if he has plans to represent Les Bleus at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Responding to that, the keeper said: “First you have to qualify. But yes, that’s a goal, clearly. The reality is that I am in the last phase of my career, that I cannot project myself further than that.”
“I want to live in the present moment, I have no control over the future. Of course, I feel great physically and mentally, but I can’t predict what will happen. I just want to give all my energy until then, and then we’ll see.”
The former Nice man arrived at the north London club in 2012 and has already started his 10th season with the Premier League side. His current deal runs out in less than a year’s time, but the contract situation doesn’t seem to bother Lloris.
“At the moment, there is nothing from the club [on renewal], but I’m fine about that,” the Frenchman explained.
“I look back, I continue to be fully committed to the club, as I have been doing for nine seasons, and to contribute to a new momentum, to new energy with a new coach and a new sporting director. I don’t have to prove my loyalty to Spurs.”
It was no surprise that Lloris was quizzed about his former manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is now managing Paris Saint-Germain.
On Pochettino, Lloris said: “We have been linked since his time in Tottenham, we follow each other, we support each other, whether he or his staff. I am totally behind him, he knows it. To see Messi with him is extraordinary. He’s someone I hold in high regard, and he deserves nothing but good things.”
