Even before it was announced that Chelsea had unilaterally extended Olivier Giroud’s contract by a year at Stamford Bridge, Milan were the favourites to sign the Frenchman.
They thought they would be able to bring him in on a free at the time, since his deal was set to expire on June 30th of this year, and yet despite the triggering of the clause, their belief is they can still avoid paying a transfer fee for the veteran forward.
That’s because there has been a lot of talk of a promise made by Roman Abramovich that Giroud could still move abroad for free if he received an offer that tickled his fancy.
Milan has done just that, and the Serie A side are simply waiting for the contract to be rescinded in order to secure the free transfer.
The Italian website state that, according to their information, ‘there would have been further steps forward towards the white smoke in the last few hours’.
It’s said ‘the conclusion of the negotiation with Chelsea now seems around the corner, with possible positive news already in the next few hours’.
