The current most expensive Danish footballer is Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who moved from Bayern Munich to Southampton during the summer transfer window. Before him, the most expensive was Jannik Vestergaard, who moved from Werder Bremen to Borussia Monchengladbach earlier on in the window.

Things are going well for Vestergaard, and there’s every chance the 24 year old defender could break the record again if moved to the Premier League. Danish newspaper BT have been speaking to him, and put that prospect over.

However, Vestergaard believes the most likely people to break the record are at Tottenham and Ajax. Christian Eriksen is arguably the most valuable Danish player right now, especially after signing a new contract with Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham. Another possibility to break the mark is Ajax’s Kasper Dolberg, the 19 year old striker really making a name for himself this season.

Vestergaard explained: “I don’t (think I’ll break the record). There are a few others, for example, a goalscorer at Ajax, and then there is one at Tottenham. They will probably be sold for more than me.”

Eriksen hasn’t had the best start to a season, but scored Tottenham’s goal against Chelsea at weekend, a match Pochettino’s men lost 2-1.

Whilst there’s no doubt an Eriksen transfer would break the current Højbjerg record, it’s not likely he’s going anywhere soon. Dolberg may be best staying where he is for a season or two longer as well.

Back to Vestergaard, he had it put to him that his next transfer may be to the Premier League and said: “I cannot refuse.”

I know that for many Danes the Premier League is an ultimate goal. I will not deny it, but it is not an overriding goal. It is important for me to be in a club where I can be allowed to play.”

Whilst the Premier League dream seems to be there for Vestergaard, he said he’d also be happy to extend his contract.

Hypothetically, if Eriksen was to leave Tottenham, then he’d surely smash the record. Højbjerg cost Southampton just over £12m, and Eriksen would no doubt cost at least twice, or thrice, as much.
