Étienne Capoue moved to Watford in summer 2015 after failing to fully convince Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham.

Pochettino had a good selection of alternatives to Capoue which made it look like an exit was best for everyone involved. For Capoue the move to Watford has been great for his career, and this season he’s especially looked to have made a step forward.

Manager Walter Mazzarri uses the former Tottenham player in a more attacking position, something he wouldn’t have got at Spurs with the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in the way.

However, Capoue also pointed out that Tottenham are in a position that they could simply dispense with him when it didn’t work out, and sign someone else: “It’s not serious, we’ll buy another one.”

That’s in contrast to France where most of the clubs would have to work hard to make sure a big money signing worked out.
