Back in August, a few reports emerged from France that Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool were interest in bringing Lyon’s young full-back Jordy Gaspar to Anfield.
The 19-year-old, who has already made three appearances for the Ligue 1 club this season, including against Sevilla in the Champions League, is seen as a great prospect by his current side, and their ideal situation would be to keep him.
He said: “If I haven’t signed [a professional contract with Lyon] yet, it’s because my agents are doing an excellent job. I could’ve been pro well before the end of last season, to tell you the truth, but we’re currently negotiating, and that’s not easy.”
Explaining that the sporting project is ‘more important’ than the financial aspect of things, and that’s what his agents want for him: a good project where he can develop as a footballer.
Lyon remains his number one choice, but the left-back, which is a position Klopp was, and probably still is, looking to improve, admits that while he may have played for them a bit this season, he knows it’ll be tough to break through in the long run.
This is why moving abroad could be an option, even if he admits his agents have sheltered him from the rumours as he’s ‘not aware from any interest from foreign clubs’.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t any, and if Liverpool do turn their interest into something more serious, he’ll be ready.
He said: “Does playing abroad scare me? Oh no, that doesn’t scare me at all”.
