“There was hardly any contact” – Chelsea man discusses penalty decision, arm came out ‘instinctively’

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has insisted he should not have had a penalty awarded against him in the win over Atlético Madrid.

The Blues beat Diego Simeone’s side 2-0 in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 clash last night, securing a 3-0 aggregate win to progress to the quarter-finals.

The game proved to be a comfortable affair for Chelsea, who, courtesy of a masterclass from N’Golo Kanté, were never truly in danger from their Spanish counterparts.

The game was not without its controversy, however, with many feeling Atlético should have been awarded a first-half penalty when Azpilicueta was pictured pulling back Yannick Carrasco.

Replays appeared to show the decision was a clear one, with fans and pundits alike after the game admitting Chelsea had been lucky to see the decision, or lack of it, go in their favour.

Azpilicueta is having none of that, though, admitting he did do something, but it was not enough to concede a spot-kick.

“It’s an action in which I put my arm out, but I hardly used any force, and he did his best to get the referee to call a penalty,” EFE report him telling Movistar.

“It wasn’t enough; I instinctively put my arm out, but there was hardly any contact, and he was looking for a penalty, just as we would have done on the other side.”
