There was a time when the idea of Jürgen Klopp being replaced at Liverpool was nothing short of farcical, as the German manager reinstated the Reds at the top of the pile, winning the Champions League and the Premier League along the way.
This season, however, has seen the Anfield club falter a number of times, leaving them well off the pace, with them currently sixth in the league after 24 games, 16 points behind Manchester City.
A departure has been excluded by Klopp himself, but should he, or the club, decide enough is enough, many expect one man to almost be guaranteed the job: Rangers’ Steven Gerrard.
The Liverpool legend has done an incredible job at Ibrox ever since he was appointed as the Scottish Premiership side’s manager, fully exemplified by the ridiculous season the club are having.
Following Antwerp’s 4-3 loss at the hands of Steven Gerrard’s men on Thursday night, former U21 Belgium international Mo Messoudi explained it won’t be long before the ex-midfielder takes over from Klopp at Anfield.
He said on Sporza: “It’s only a matter of time before he’s at Liverpool. When Gerrard made the switch from Liverpool’s U19s to the Scottish record champions, Rangers were not yet the top team they are today. He quickly put in place a clear system, with lots of attacking impulses pushing forward.
“Gerrard is certainly a candidate to succeed Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool in the long run. The successes that Rangers are currently achieving is also largely due to the manager”.
