On December 21st, we carried a report from Le10 Sport, who explained Saint-Étienne haven’t given up on signing Leicester City’s Islam Slimani in the winter market.
The striker has been given just 19 minutes of action this season and that came in the Foxes’ 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in October.
Slimani’s current deal runs down at the end of this season, and his situation at the King Power is attracting interest from the Ligue 1 side.
Today’s edition of L’Equipe looks at the areas where Saint-Étienne need to improve, and mentions the need to sign a new No.9 in the upcoming window.
The Algeria international is a target for the French club as he has already played under their manager Claude Puel, at Leicester.
It’s claimed Saint-Étienne’s ‘contact has not broken with’ the player, and the entourage of Bernard Caïazzo, chairman of the supervisory board, ‘continues to work’ on the Slimani case.
The Leicester City man earns €380,000 gross per month, which is a hindrance for Puel’s side.
Saint-Étienne need to balance their books and even if they do, they could afford a salary of around €1-1.5m (most likely per year) to ‘recruit in January’.
